The title does not appear on the painting. It seems likely that this is an unfinished composition since, having created a number of pictures of landscapes without figures or animals, this composition seems to have been designed to receive subject matter in the foreground. He has raised his viewpoint and moved towards using the vertical perspective so favoured by narrative artists. The painting shows how he thought about the balances and tensions of form and colour from the earliest stages of his work on a composition. His paintings were therefore composed as totalities and not as accumulations of parts.
