32. New Forest Landscape, Railbridge
25.4 x 35.5cm. Daler Board with home-made frame
On the reverse, in Ivor's hand, is the title, New Forest Landscape, Railbridge, and the date 1973. Following the manner of his earlier New Forest View with Ponies, the horses have the delicacy of those in Persian miniatures. So subtly placed are they in this landscape that we can never lose touch with them, as our eyes roam across the rest of the composition. Everything is done here for the sake of our experience of the painting, not for verisimilitude. The road, for example, having completed its function through the bridge, is then hardly in evidence at all. His colours - his whites and red tones especially - create interactions throughout, and the precisely placed warning triangle on the bridge stands there, almost like a conductor, to maintain the whole composition in harmony.
