The Paintings of Ivor John Powell

The vision of a border Welshman

Landscape with Trees by Ivor Powell

3. Landscape with Trees

24.4 x 34.4cm. Canvas with new frame

NLW(PG 5891)

This composition was given no title by Ivor himself. It shares the dark tones, and the absence of animals or people, of New Forest Scene, and is also likely to have been one of his earliest. The subject seems to be a piece of landscape which he could see from a roadway. Its dramatic possibilities seem to have attracted him and he shows awareness of the way elements in his composition offer possibilities of formal and colour contrasts. His modelling of leaf and branch structures creates both balances and tensions, and he makes sure that a section in the boundary wall in the left foreground, with some red tones, is related to a light green tree above it. In this way, he was already involving himself in the organising of sensory elements and the editing of what he saw.
