The vision of a border Welshman

Neighbour

28. Neighbour's House (The Firs)

40.5 x 50.5cm. Daler Board with home-made reversed frame

NLW(PG 5869)

This third version of the Firs has Neighbour's House, Winter 1970-71, written on the reverse, in Ivor's hand. Unlike the earlier versions, which have only recently been framed, he made his own frame for this composition, using his reversed technique. The changes he made here were not only to the house itself (the walls are now cream and the bay window has either been removed during renovation or is now obscured by a bush), but to the grounds around it. He now included the gate to his own garden and a more prominent version of his garage. A neighbour's garage, which he included in the second Firs, he removed, enabling him to give a much more considered treatment of the greenhouse. This version was both a more accurate record of what he could see and also a more resolved visual structure.
